As a Data Scientist at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), I build predictive models and user interfaces to help optimize manufacturing operations and parts delivery. I collaborate with teams to develop data-driven tools that improve efficiency and support the production of quality Subaru vehicles.
What is your favorite part about your current occupation/position?
My favorite part is working with people to improve their processes and build tools that make their jobs easier. It’s rewarding to see their reactions, hear how much time they’ve saved, and see the value my work brings to SIA. I also enjoy constantly learning new tools, working on meaningful projects, and helping others understand what a data scientist does.
How did you get to where you are now (education, internship, mentors, chance encounters, etc.)?
UIUC and my professors played a significant role in shaping my career. Professor Christopher Kinson encouraged me to pursue graduate school, and the MAGNet program at State Farm helped make that opportunity possible. My internship was a major part of that journey, and I learned a lot from that experience.
What aspects of your Illinois education have been most beneficial to your career?
The curriculum gave me a strong technical foundation, while internship opportunities and industry connections helped me apply what I was learning to real-world problems. My professors also provided valuable guidance and encouragement. Just as important was the sense of community. Being surrounded by motivated, enthusiastic students created an environment that encouraged me to grow and explore new opportunities.
What advice would you give to current students about the professional realm?
Stay curious and embrace each chapter of your career. While you’re in school, make the most of that opportunity to learn and explore without putting pressure on yourself to know everything. Data science and AI span so many interconnected fields that there will always be something new to learn, that’s part of what makes the work exciting. Be eager to learn, willing to adapt, and patient with yourself as you develop.
What did you enjoy about being a student at the University of Illinois? What was your favorite place, thing, or activity while on campus?
My favorite place on campus was the Quad. I loved sitting in front of the Union, and being so close to Green Street, where there were plenty of cafés, boba shops, and places to sit and talk with friends. To me, the way campus is laid out is what make Illinois special. There are so many places to spend time between classes. Looking back, I realize how lucky I was to experience the campus.
Any other details or fun facts that you would like to share:
My first date with my husband was at Cocomero, so it will always be a special place to me! I also love the soup at Midsummer Lounge, it’s still my favorite.
