Statistics graduate student Alexander “Sasha” Matveev was named the Most Outstanding Graduate Intern at the University of Illinois Research Park’s 20th annual Intern Awards Ceremony, held July 23.
Matveev was recognized for his contributions during his internship with State Farm, where he worked as part of the company’s data science team. His project is helping State Farm evaluate whether to invest in a vendor tool or develop an internal solution, requiring him to independently scope the project, develop a timeline and explore potential solutions.
“Sasha truly stepped up, demonstrating consistent growth, dedication, passion, and leadership,” said Betsy Podkowa, Lead Data Scientist at State Farm and Matveev’s supervisor and nominator. “He has worked effectively without detailed instructions and dives deeply into various ideas and alternative solutions, using solid reason and decision making to push his project forward while maintaining the overall vision.”
Beyond his project responsibilities, Matveev also made an impact on the broader Research Park intern community. He created and led a study group to help fellow interns prepare for full-time interviews, with his efforts contributing to multiple full-time job offers. Podkowa also highlighted his willingness to help colleagues navigate technical and professional challenges and his role in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for fellow interns.
For Matveev, the MAGNet internship program provided an opportunity to put classroom knowledge into practice while continuing to learn beyond the classroom.
“MAGNet is an incredible opportunity to not only apply the knowledge and skills gained in class, but also a fantastic learning experience that goes beyond lecture materials,” Matveev said.
Reflecting on his experience, Matveev identified flexibility and the ability to build upon existing knowledge as key lessons from his project. “Being flexible with new tools and ideas while leaning on your prior knowledge and skills can help you create a product that is more than the sum of its parts,” he said.
The Research Park Intern Awards recognize outstanding student interns from corporate innovation centers and startups across the University of Illinois Research Park. Matveev’s selection as Most Outstanding Graduate Intern highlights both his technical contributions at State Farm and his leadership and commitment to supporting the success of those around him.
Matveev completed a bachelors in statistics in May, 2025 and is currently a masters student in the analytics concentration program.
