The AAAS was founded in 1848 and began the tradition of AAAS Fellows in 1874. The AAAS awards the distinction of Fellow to its members in recognition of their contributions to science and technology, scientific leadership and extraordinary achievements across disciplines. This year there were 396 members of the AAAS who were awarded the honor. Members of the 24 steering groups of the AAAS nominate members for the Fellow and then the AAAS Council votes on the aggregated list.
