The Department of Statistics requires a minimum TOEFL PBT score of 590, a minimum TEOFL CBT score of 243, a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 92 or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 for admission.

You may be exempt from having to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score if you meet one of the following:

  • Completion of at least two years of post-secondary full-time study, as defined by the home institution, in a country where English is the primary language and at an institution where English is the primary medium of instruction, within five years of the proposed term of initial enrollment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
    or
  • Completion of a graduate degree in a country where English is the primary language and at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, within five years of the proposed term of initial enrollment.

The TOEFL and IELTS scores are just for admission purposes only. If you meet the minimum requirements for admission but are admitted on a limited status basis you will need to take an English Proficiency Test (EPT) upon arrival to campus. Admitted international students who will be appointed any classroom responsibilities via an International Teaching Assistantship (ITA) position and have not met the English proficiency requirements will also need to take an English Proficiency Interview  (EPI) before being assigned an ITA position.

To be exempt from having to take an EPT or EPI upon arrival to campus you must have a total TOEFL score greater than a 102 or an IELTS total score greater than a 7.0. For further information about the English proficiency requirement, please see: English Proficiency Requirements for Admission.
