Debbie Ungson-Walbert joined the Department of Statistics as its new Career Services Advisor earlier this term. Ms. Ungson-Walbert holds both her B.S. and M.A. in economics. Before moving towards higher education, she worked primarily in government settings such as the Illinois Commerce Commission and the Department of Energy and Natural Resources. She then worked for Heartland Community College, as an academic resource within their math department.
Ms. Ungson-Walbert returned to working for the state as a certified career coach through the National Association of Colleges and Employers. She is thrilled to now be at the University of Illinois, and is ready to share her expertise on career planning with statistics students.
Debbie Ungson-Walbert’s primary goal within the department is to provide support to students as they prepare for life outside of college. She hopes to help make her students’ career goals less daunting by showing them what small steps they could take now. To Ms. Ungson-Walbert, your career is a lifelong process. Thus, she wants students to know that it is never too early or too late to seek career advising. She also emphasizes a multi-dimensional approach to academic and career success, recognizing the importance of your own personal goals and support system.
Ms. Ungson-Walbert will serve as a guiding resource for statistics majors, minors, and graduate students. She can help to build and review your application materials such as resumes and cover letters. She also provides tips for job hunting, networking, comparing job offers, and finding your proper work-life balance. Whether you have questions about your life after graduation, or just need someone to read your cover letter, Debbie Ungson-Walbert would be happy to assist you.
